Active Release Technique (ART)

Dr. Bolz is Certified in Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, and Spine ART protocols. He has extensive training in ART and participates yearly on the ART treatment team at the Woodlands Ironman Event. Dr. Bolz works with many local running clubs, triathlon clubs, and Cross fit Boxes.

What is Active Release Technique (ART) to Individual, Athletes, and Patients? ART is a patented, non-invasive, soft-tissue treatment process that both locates and breaks down the scar tissue and fibrotic adhesions, which cause pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, and physical dysfunction associated with Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). This technique treats problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and nerves. Common conditions such as IT Band Syndrome, hamstring or groin pulls, calf tightness, piriformis syndrome, glute tightness, plantar fascitis, shin splints, shoulder or back pain usually resolve quickly and permanently with ART. ART has become one of the most sought after sports injury techniques in professional and amateur sports due to its high degree of effectiveness. All the above injuries have one thing in common: they are all a result of over used muscles.

Why is ART different?

ART is a highly successful approach to injuries of muscles, tendons, nerves, and the surrounding soft-tissues. ART is not massage, physical therapy, or chiropractic care. While those procedures relieve muscle and motion dysfunction, they do not necessarily address the underlying problems caused by scar tissue formation.

What is an ART treatment like?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. These treatment protocols, over 500 specific moves, are unique to ART. They allow the provider to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie cutter approach. The three most common mechanisms of injury are:

1. Acute trauma
2. Constant pressure/tension
3. Repetitive motion

ART has been proven to help with the following conditions:

  • Back Pain
