Differences between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist

Nowadays it is quite common that, at some point in their lives, people need to consult a health professional to treat some ailment related to the musculoskeletal system. When deciding to seek professional help, many choose between a physical therapist and a chiropractor as if they were the same profession, but they are not the same. Read on to learn more.

These two professions have mainly different backgrounds. To become a physiotherapist, you need to study for a university degree in physiotherapy, which takes about 4-5 years approximately. As for the chiropractor, this has to be trained through studies in specialized schools, which can take 5 to 7 years to achieve.

Another point is the type of intervention they perform. While both professions are dedicated to improving the health status of patients, their approach is different. In chiropractic, the origin of the problems belongs to a misalignment of the spine, having to intervene in the form of manipulations or adjustments. In physiotherapy, its approach is more general, being able to cover more structures, but concentrating on the focus of the pain.

This last aspect is related to the type of treatment offered by each professional. In the case of the physiotherapist, this treats the symptoms through various techniques, while the chiropractor, although paying attention to the symptoms, focuses mainly on diagnosing the vertebral misalignment and correcting it.

To conclude, although these professions have different ways of working, both are aimed at improving the patient’s quality of life, being able not only to treat, but also to give advice to prevent other conditions. In addition, they can go hand in hand with other specialties, as long as the patient is seen in a holistic manner.
